6 mos + 2 wks: losing the 4th nap

For the past week, we've been having a hard time getting Brie to nap because of a couple of reasons:

(1) She wants to sleep longer on her third nap, which is usually 1:30PM to 3PM, and can't seem to settle down for the fourth (cat) nap usually at 4:30PM to 5PM.

For a couple of days we'd try to settle down for the cat nap because she'll be rubbing her eyes and pulling on her ears, but all she'll do is nurse for a while and after 15 minutes of lying down, when I finally turn off the white noise she'd brighten up and she's ready to go out of the room again and play! But instead of being really tired by her usual bedtime 7:30PM, she's overtired by 7PM.

What I read is that at around 5 months, the baby will start to lose one nap. But they don't actually sleep less, because what they do is consolidate the lost nap with either bedtime or the earlier nap. I was waiting for that to happen and already doubted we'll be losing a nap until this happened.

Instead of pushing for an earlier bedtime, we'll first let Brie sleep longer on her third nap. For the past month, I always had to wake her up at 3PM to keep her schedule. Maybe she really just needs to nap longer at that time.

(2) She discovered she can walk assisted! She's been practicing getting herself pulled up from sitting position to standing position and she'd make so much noise until we help her walk - usually on the couch or on the bed to save ourselves from back pain.

This was a really big deal for her. She would really brighten up whenever she's holding on to someone or something while standing up. And she gets super excited walking on the floor; we let her walk from the corridor to the bathroom when it's time for her night shower.

It was such a big deal that she started crying whenever I picked her up from the bed, after nursing, to rock her to sleep. She would only stop crying after I put her back on the bed. It was distressing because I knew she couldn't always nurse to sleep.

On the third day, she fell asleep for a minute and startled herself awake and did the most natural thing: she cried really bad. I picked her up and rocked her for a few seconds and she was asleep. Ever since then she started letting me rock her to sleep again.

I'm guessing she forgot that she normally gets rocked/held to sleep because of her recent milestone.

DIY Felt Dress Up Dolls Series: Cinderella

Cinderella has a very special place in Brie's heart. It probably has a lot to do with her Costco pull-up diapers; the night-time pull-ups are Disney themed with two patterns: Cinderella or Belle (still with Cinderella in the background). This is what Cinderella looks like when assembled. This was a fun dress. There is just so much going on. I glued the shoulder puffs onto the torso, then glued the gown puff on the skirt. The gloves were a nice touch don't you think? I know I'm still missing the headband. I still haven't decided whether to use felt or to embroider it. It can wait and I promise to give an update if I ever improve on it. DIY: magnetic fishing game

I'm not even sure if Brie is ready for this game at 16 months but I know that she currently loves magnets. So instead of buying her a fishing toy, I decided to make a set out of whatever materials I already have. I used the following: foam sheets for the fish paper clips to make the fish magnetic a tiny magnet sewed into a cloth pouch ribbon for the fishing line a chopstick for the fishing pole glue to stick things with, scissors to cut things with, and finally a marker to draw the fish details and make them cute Cut out fish from foam sheets. Best to cut out one and then use that as a template for the rest. Then you put a paper clip on one fish and glue on another foam fish on top of that. Use a marker to draw the fish details.  I don't have step-by-step pictures for the "hook and line" that I made. It's very simple: get a tiny magnet, put it in a piece of cloth, sew it sealed, then tie a ribbon on that and onto a chopstick. That...

Toddler diet: breakfast sample

When my toddler's appetite spikes, I make sure I make the most out of it. Here is one of those breakfasts that Brie enjoyed and actually finished. It took a while - the whole morning - but hey, I'm not complaining! Brie usually sits down for breakfasts, gets full, then starts play time. An hour or so after, I make sure that same breakfast plate is within reach and she either nibbles while she plays or I sneak in a bite for her every now and then. Not pictured: a cup of orange juice, a cup of milk (with Nesquick), and a cup of water. I always make drinks readily available throughout the day because we are still breastfeeding and weaning very, veeerryy sloooowwllyyyyyyyy
